Bringing natural gas to your community

We are bringing natural gas to Saugeen. By switching to natural gas, households can save up to 52% each year on home and water heating. Local businesses could see up to a 30% reduction in their energy costs annually for space and water heating.

Households that qualify for the province’s First Nations On-Reserve Delivery Credit have seen the delivery charges for electricity removed from their hydro bills. By switching to natural gas, these households will still save up to $650 each year on home and water heating.

Ontario Energy Board review and approval is required before the project can proceed. Once approved, construction would begin as early as Spring, 2020.

Check back often for the latest information about the project and start saving as early as fall 2020.

*Natural gas prices are based on rates effective April 1, 2019. Oil and propane prices are based on the latest available retail prices. Electricity prices are based on Hydro One Distribution rates (Med Density R1) as of May 1, 2018; the delivery charges are fully offset by a First Nations Delivery Credit. Costs have been calculated for the equivalent energy consumed and include all service, delivery and energy charges. HST is not included.

About the project

This project includes the construction of 16 kilometres of natural gas pipeline at a total cost of $3.3 million, made possible by:

  • A $1/ month contribution from new and existing natural gas utility customers in Ontario, which was implemented on July 1, 2019.
  • A system expansion surcharge of $0.23 cents per cubic metre of natural gas used over a term of 40 years, to be paid by new customers in the communities served by the expansion projects.
  • A contribution from the municipality or Indigenous community served.
